This is a truly unique piece of fused glass art - the painting 'Monk at Sea' by Caspar David Friedrich recreated in glass by only using glass powder!
Replicating a painting into glass has long been an ambition of mine. In glass fusing however you painstakingly sift glass powder onto the glass rather than diluting it with water and applying it with a paint brush. The glass curve is opaque in colour but is translucent, so it lets through the light. This was done in different stages and has been fired several times in the kiln in my studio.
The original painting is called 'Monk at Sea', painted by Caspar David Friedrich and has long been a favourite of mine – a figure looking out onto the sea and a massive moody dark sky. Research has shown that this depicted Friedrich’s personal grief following several consecutive bereavements of close family members and that the monk is contemplating, looking over to the ‘other side’ to which his loved ones have passed on.
The curve stands up by itself and needs no fixings, so it is ready to stand up as soon as it is unpacked from your delivery. It is entirely made of glass, so could even go into humid environments such as a kitchen or bathroom.
